Notes Four-piece pop group dating from 1958, also worked as Cliff Richard's backing group as well as performing as a group in their own right (see biography). See also Cliff Richard & the Shadows Group originally comprised Hank Marvin (lead guitar) (qv), Bruce Welch (rhythm guitar) (qv), Jet Harris (bass) (qv), and Tony Meehan (drums) (qv). The latter two left the group in 1962 to perform both together and as solo acts. They were replaced by Brian Bennett (qv) on drums and bassist Brian Locking. The Shadows subsequently went through a number of line-up changes, but Marvin and Welch still remained the core of the group. Receiving an Ivor Novello Award in 1983 to celebrate their 25th anniversary, they still perform today (1997). Initially called The Drifters, but changed name to avoid clashing with US Soul group of the same name.
