Biography See biography. Female vocal group formed from four Detroit schoolgirls in the late 1950s. Originally called The Primettes the group comprised Diana Ross, Betty Hutton, Florence Ballard and Mary Wilson. Found success in the early 1960s when Diana Ross supplanted Ballard as the regular lead vocalist. Ross's importance to group's success was underlined in 1967 when, upon Ballard's ousting, the group was renamed `Diana Ross and the Supremes' (qv) and was to remain so until Ross left to go solo in 1969. The group continued as the `Supremes' after Ross's departure, with Mary Wilson as lead vocalist throughout the remaining lifetime of the group but a changing line-up among the other three vocalists. They disbanded in 1976.
