Biography 1977/03/08. Carlo Battisti died in Florence aged 94. Professor of Linguistics at Florence University from 1921 to 1953, author of five-volume Italian etymological dictionary, who won general fame in 1954 when he played the lonely old man "Umberto D" in Vittorio de Sica's classic film.
