Notes To service the South of England. Broadcast from Southampton. Franchise transferred to Television South 1982. Southern Television was awarded the South of England franchise and began transmitting on 30th August 1958. The initial contract for the franchise was to last up to July 1964. The franchise was extended after this date. However, in the 1980-82 round of contracts, Southern TV lost the franchise to Television South which began transmissions 1st January 1982. The company's library was taken over by the Primetime Group in 1988. The Southern TV archive (scripts, stills etc) was donated tothe British Film Institute Library in 1982.
