Since the life-giving crystal cracked over 1000 years ago, the evil Skeksis have ruled the world. The benign Mystics, who once ruled, have raised Jen, thought to be the last surviving gelfling, to save the world by restoring a shard from the crystal that he must recover from the witch Aughra. On his adventure Jen meets a female gelfling named Kira, rides a landstrider to the Skeksis castle, enters through the sewers, and restores the shard to the crystal.
