GEMS OF LITERATURE: The TAMING OF THE SHREW
Archive holds second half only: Katharina berates her father, Baptista, for wanting her to marry Petruchio, and tells him she will see him hanged first. Baptista congratulates Petruchio, who tries to kiss Katharina. Everyone laughs as Katharina runs from the room (131). The wedding day: Katharina is in a temper because Petruchio is late, and is comforted by her bridesmaids while Baptista looks worried. Petruchio arrives wearing a torn cloak and tells Baptista that Katharina will make his temper more ragged than his clothes. He manhandles Katharina off to the church (390). Petruchio and Katharina arrive at his home in Verona after an exhausting journey. Petruchio berates the servants for not meeting them and throws the dinner away when he discovers it to be burnt. Katharina tries to calm him but still ends up with no dinner (585). He then deprives her of sleep by pretending to find the bed unaired, throws the bedding out of the bedroom and leaves Katharina to sleep in a chair (759). The next day Petruchio makes Katharina say thank you for her dinner, but she begins to admire him for having a stronger temper than her own (874). Meanwhile, Baptista learns that Bianca's tutor Lucentio is a nobleman in disguise. Tranio tells Baptista that he forswears Bianca forever, and leaves. Baptista sees Bianca and Lucentio kissing, and joins their hands in a blessing (941ft 35mm).
