Barbara marries the handsome Edmond, although he has not her class or education, to the chagrin of Lord Uplandtowers, who wants her for himself. Edmond is sent to Italy to acquire some social graces, but while there is hideously disfigured in a fire, while saving others' lives. When he eventually returns to England, Barbara cannot bring herself to look at him and runs from him in terror. Distraught, Edmond disappears, and dies later abroad. In time, Barbara marries Uplandtowers but the union is not happy. Then one day a sculpture is delivered, made of Edmond before the fire. Barbara builds a shrine for it in her boudoir and worships it every night. When Uplandtowers finds out, he vows to put a stop to it......
