WASHES WHITER: The GETAWAY PEOPLE
Library Synopsis
A portrait of post-war Britain as seen through its advertising over four decades, revealing a curious swing in emphasis and reflection of society's attitudes and values at the different times. This alternates between forward-looking modernity to a nostalgia for a simpler, more reassuring rural England. It also considers how the enterprise culture and emphasis on money, prestige and gain in the 1980s was reflected in the adverts, especially in the increasing number for banks, pensions, insurance and shares, and also how the new values towards a softer approach and "greeness" are reflected in advertising.
