Adaptation of the novel by Amy Tan. A party is held for a young Chinese-American woman about to visit China to meet her half-sisters, the daughters of her recently deceased mother. Scenes from the party are intercut with long flashbacks to episodes from the lives of the woman, her mother, her mother's three friends and their respective daughters.
