Dr John Gruzelier of Charing Cross Hospital and Dr Helen Crawford in Virginia are leading the search for a physiological marker by which the state of hypnosis can be measured. In contrast, psychologists Dr Graham Wagstaffe of Liverpool University and Dr Nicholas Spanos of Ottawa favour the social psychological model of hypnosis, claiming that hypnosis is social compliance and a fallacy that has been handed down between generations.
