Swashbuckling adventure story based on the character created by Johnston McCulley in a short story published in 1919. After two decades of imprisonment in Alta California, the aristocratic hero escapes to resume his fight against Spanish oppression and exact revenge against his arch enemy, the former governor, Don Montero. He enlists the aid of a young bandit, who carries his own vendetta against the men who murdered his brother, to whom he imparts his sword fighting skills.
FILM HISTORY
In 1991 project mooted with Spielberg as director and Nancy Larson as screenwriter; in 1994 Mikael Salomon was down to direct for Spielberg as producer (see references; credits). Julio Medem was invited to direct, circa 1996.
