Police drama set in Oxford. Dr Felix McClure, a retired univeristy fellow, is stabbed to death, and a student apparently commits suicide in McClure's building. College scout Ted Brooks is taken into hospital with a heart attack. The dead academic apparently had a relationship with Brook's step-daughter, Kay, now working as an escort in London and engaged to rich student Ashley Davis. It becomes clear that Ted Brooks has been violent towards his wife and stepdaughter. A ceremonial knife goes missing from a museum, and a body is washed up on the banks of the Cherwell.
