Library Synopsis

Presents Russian cinema in terms of turn-of-the-century philosopher, Nikolay Berdyaev. Argues that all Russian films in some way fall into his 'Russian idea' of conflicting elements: militant atheism, despotism, cruelty and servility contrast with a desire for god, anarchy, kindness and need for revolt. Draws on classics of Soviet cinema to make the points.
