Library Synopsis

Kevin, who has a progressive degenerative condition, is assigned as reading tutor to Max who is virtually illiterate. A friendship grows between the two boys who are both outsiders, based at first upon a joint venture into the imaginative world of Arthurian legend.

BNFVC Notes

Based on the novel `Freak the Mighty' by Rodman Philbrick. Set in Cincinnati, charts the growing bond between two adolescent, misfit boys. One is large for his age and has trouble reading and writing. He has lived with his grandparents since his father was jailed for murdering his mother. The other, a classmate and new neighbour, has a degenerative bone-marrow disease which has given him curvature of the spine and needs crutches to walk. He is assigned as tutor to the first boy, who begins to enjoy reading, and grows particularly fond of Arthurian tales of knights undertaking heroic quests and selfless deeds.
