Geoff Figg has taught at St. John's for six months. He begins to see the "system" from the point of view of those that are educated by it and doomed to unemployment. His tactics in his anti-corporal punishment campaign lead to a crisis.

First of four dramas looking at the conflict between the old, authoritarian methods of schoolteaching and the more relaxed methods favoured by progressive minded teachers. Set in a large comprehensive school, the focus is on an idealistic teacher who is prepared to sacrifice his career to change the system.
