The GOLDEN COMPASS
Library Synopsis
An adaptation of Philip Pullman's novel 'Northern Lights' part of the trilogy 'His Dark Materials'. Set in a parallell universe, where people have visible individual spirits in animal form, centring on young Lyra and her adventures. Her academic and explorer uncle antagonises the sinister quasi-religious Magesterium with his heretical ideas. Lyra saves him from an attempted poisoning, but finds herself at risk from the powerful Mrs Coulter, who is in league with the Senate and shows an interest in Lyra for personal reasons. Lyra is given an illicit golden compass, which will always show those who can read it the truth. In an attempt to rescue her friends, who have been kidnapped by the government for secret experiments, she travels to the far north, and is befriended and aided by Iorek, a polar bear and former prince of his tribe.
